TCRA awards eight ICT scholarships

Eight graduates have been awarded ICT scholarships from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).

TCRA director genera­l John Mkoma said the programme was run in a bid to help address the shortage of professionals in the sector.

He said that the TCRA announced the scholarships last year and the applicants were selected by involving various independent experts and bodies, including the Higher Education Students’ Loan Board (HESLB).

The successful candidates were selected from 46 applicants. Among them are a PhD student, two pursuing masters' degrees and the rest, undergraduate degrees.

Communications, Science and Technology permanent secretary Dr Florence Turuka said extra efforts were needed to enable more students to access higher education, especially in the ICT field.

TANZANIA to host region’s first ICT smart village

TANZANIA will soon be home to an Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) park comprising the first ever 'Smart Village' of its kind in East Africa's geographic cluster, a national forum heard on Thursday. 

The Minister for Communication, Science and Technology, Prof Makame Mnyaa, said the park, to be established in Dar es Salaam, would be powered by an international high speed broadband access and global calibre end-to-end ICT infrstructure. 

Prof Mnyaa said that a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement is being prepared to develop the village to host ICT small and medium enterprises (SMEs), established multinationals and IT Services. 

He was speaking during a presentation of ground breaking research findings by Canada's International Centre for Development Research (IDRC) and the Commission (COSTECH). 

The minister informed Legislators and private sector stakeholders who were present that the Park would also have Business Process Outsourcing call (BPO) call centres, online education, community public space and an ICT incubation centre for creativity and innovation. 

The announcement follows a two-year research in Iringa region that showed access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has cut poverty levels in some areas by over 20 per cent in the last two years.

NHC's weekly TV Program "Maisha Ni Nyumba" to be broadcasted on TBC1, STAR TV and Channel Ten

MAISHA NI NYUMBA is a newly TV program to be broadcasted on weekly basis by Tanzania's most favorite TV channels including TBC1, STAR TV and Channel Ten. The program which is part of National Housing Corporation's communication strategy to reach out to various stakeholders, clients and the general public will feature in exclusive interviews, featuted stories and news related to the housing sector in Tanzania and the world at large. The program will be aired on STAR TV every monday from 8:30-9:00 PM as well as TBC1 and Channel TEN from 9:30-10:00 PM on wednesday and friday respectively.

ICTR sets free ex-Rwandan chief of staff Ndindiliyimana

The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) on Tuesday ordered the immediate release of former chief of staff of Rwandan Gendarmerie, General Augustin Ndindiliyimana, and sentenced army General Augustin Bizimungu to 30 years imprisonment for genocide.

Meanwhile, ex-commander of the Reconnaissance Battalion, Major Francois-Xavier Nzuwonemeye and Captain Innocent Sagahutu, a member of the unit, jointly charged with the two generals, were ordered to remain behind bars for 20 years each after being convicted of crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Ndindiliyimana was released after a Trial Chamber sentenced him to time served since his arrest in Belgium on January 29, 2000 after finding his mitigating factors warranting.
